He joined the FARC in 1997 after serving in the Patriotic Union and running for the Frontino municipal council. He was a member of the International Commission of the guerrilla movement based in Costa Rica. He was in charge of the FARC’s external relations, which is why he is also known as “the FARC’s minister of foreign affairs.”
