He served in the Colombian Communist Youth. He joined the FARC in the mid-1980s at the command of the “Hernando González Acosta” guerrilla cadre school, where he gave the order to execute many members of the school, which ended his period of command and led to a sanction in 1990. In 1999, he was a member of the negotiating team at the El Caguán dialogues.
