He studied social sciences at the Universidad Santiago de Cali. He served in the Colombian Communist Youth and joined the FARC in the 1970s. He was in charge of the guerrilla army’s relations with social movements and organizations in Mexico from 1993 to 2002. He attended the peace talks in El Caguán.
