He joined the FARC after having served in the Patriotic Union and running for the Frontino municipal council. He joined the 34th Front, where he was sent to Casa Verde for training in 1986. Alternate member of the Secretariat (named in 2011), member of the Central Command Structure (Estado Mayor Central), and member of the International Commission. He was in charge of the FARC’s external relations, which is why he is also known as “the FARC’s minister of foreign affairs.” He participated in the Negotiation Table as a FARC-EP plenipotentiary. Designated a representative member through Resolution No. 350 of September 21, 2012.
