Son of José Eduardo Umaña Mendoza, a human rights lawyer. His father was a lawyer with extensive experience known for defending victims of forced disappearance, including the victims of the Palace of Justice siege. His father had also defended victims of the Patriotic Union and Colombian Communist Party, and several union members. He was a member of the third delegation of armed conflict victims and met with the national government and FARC-EP delegations on October 2, 2014.
