He studied business administration and earned an MBA in marketing. He began his business career at a family business, then went on to lead Caribú Internacional. He was the manager of Almacenes Éxito and on the board of directors of Proantioquia and Ecopetrol. He participated at the Negotiation Table as a national government plenipotentiary, beginning on May 27, 2015.
