He joined the FARC’s 19th Front in the late 1980s, where he rose to a leadership position. He was in charge of promoting political materials, having been the director of the Caribbean Bloc’s Voz de la Resistencia radio station. He was in the demilitarized zone in 2000 at the launch of the Bolivarian Movement. He became a member of the Central Command Structure (Estado Mayor Central).
