How was the Peace Agreement renegotiated?

After more than four years of negotiations, the 26th of September 2016 in Cartagena, the Agreement to end the armed conflict was signed. The Agreement was submitted to a Plebiscite on October 02, in which the NO won by a small margin.

President Santos acknowledged the results, guaranteed the bilateral ceasefire would be maintained, and called on all political forces – particularly those that promoted the NO vote – to listen to them, open spaces for dialogue and define the path to peace.

After listening to the leaders on the NO and the YES vote, and in response to the clamor of thousands of citizens who took the streets to insist on the need for a negotiated solution to the conflict, the Government and the FARC renegotiated the agreement. The new agreement incorporated the vast majority of concerns expressed by the NO representatives.

On November 24 of 2016, at the Colón Theatre in Bogotá, the Final Agreement to End the Armed Conflict and Build a Stable and Lasting Peace was signed, and later endorsed by the Congress of the Republic.
